Refugees urged to uphold law and local customs in Mizoram and beyond

Aizawl, Apr 28 (UNI) The Chin Refugee Committee (CRC) based in New Delhi has urged Myanmar refugees in India to strictly abide by the laws of the host country, as part of efforts to maintain goodwill and solidarity with local communities. The appeal came after CRC leaders held a meeting with Mizoram’s lone Lok Sabha MP Richard Vanlalhmangaiha.
In a statement issued after the meeting, the CRC expressed gratitude to the Government of India for allowing Myanmar nationals to seek shelter in New Delhi, Mizoram, Manipur, and Nagaland following the military coup in Myanmar on February 1, 2021. While acknowledging that India is not a signatory to the 1951 Refugee Convention, the Committee lauded India for its humanitarian approach toward asylum seekers.
The CRC called upon all Myanmar refugees to uphold the law, remain vigilant against drug trafficking and drug use, and foster good relations with local residents. It also urged them to strictly follow any regulations laid down by the Central or State governments and civil society organisations.
“We encourage our community members to be responsible and to support efforts to maintain a drug-free environment. Compliance with the law is a way to show our appreciation to the host country,” the CRC said, urging Myanmar nationals to widely disseminate the message among displaced communities.
Meanwhile, the Young Mizo Association (YMA) central committee has also released a set of advisories for ethnic Mizos and other refugees currently taking shelter in Mizoram following turmoil in Myanmar, Bangladesh, and Manipur.
The YMA, Mizoram’s most influential civil society organisation, called on refugees and internally displaced persons (IDPs) to respect local customs and refrain from activities that could undermine social harmony. In a public statement, it warned against involvement in illegal activities such as smuggling and drug trafficking, emphasising that such actions violated state laws and the will of the people.
The association further clarified that refugees are not permitted to own land or buildings in Mizoram without the express approval of the state government, and advised against taking over rental shops by offering landlords inflated rents — a practice it described as unethical.
In addition, the YMA reminded refugees that official documents like voter ID cards, Aadhaar, birth certificates, Scheduled Tribe certificates, residential certificates, driving licences, and vehicle registrations are reserved for Indian citizens and should not be sought by non-citizens.
Refugees and IDPs were also advised to remain within their designated shelters and to obtain prior approval from authorities for any travel. The YMA directed all its branches across Mizoram to keep records of refugees residing within their areas while continuing to provide humanitarian support, citing the deep ethnic ties shared between the displaced and the local Mizo population.
