Remarkable decline in murders in TN : Police

Chennai, Apr 24 (UNI) There has been a remarkable decline in murder rates
in Tamil Nadu, the office of the Director General of Police said on Thursday.
Due to systematic, proactive and preventive measures against the rowdy
and other anti-social elements have yielded good results in terms of
remarkable reduction in the revenge and rowdy murders in Tamil Nadu.
Tamil Nadu has witnessed a significant reduction in bodily offences,
including murders, hurt cases, and riots, in the year 2024 compared
to the year 2023, due to various preventive and proactive measures
undertaken by the police.
Further, analysis of the long term trend in the murders reported indicated
that during 2017-2020, murder cases increased gradually every year and
peaked in the year 2019 with 1,745 cases.
However, from 2021 and after, murder cases consistently declined every
year, with lowest murder cases reported in the year 2024 (1,563 cases).
In fact, the year 2024 recorded the least number of murders in any year
during the last 12 years.
Rowdy murders also have been reduced significantly during the last
four years, particularly in the year 2024, which has recorded lowest
rowdy murders in last six years due to various measures taken by
police.
In continuation of the declining trend in murders, during the first quarter
of the year 2025 (January to March), 340 murders are reported,
compared to 352 murders during the first quarter of the previous year
(2024).
Police have taken various measures to control rowdy murders, since
it is difficult to prevent other category of passion murders, like murders
over illicit affair, sudden provocation, family disputes, etc.
These measures have yielded good results in terms of reduction in
murders as well as other category of bodily offences.
