Ruling NC condemns barring Jamia, Eidgah for prayers, says it didn't happen during peak of militancy

Srinagar, Apr 1 (UNI) A day after Eid prayers were not allowed at the historical Jamia Masjid and Eidgah at the old city Srinagar, ruling National Conference termed the move “deeply unfortunate and condemnable.”
In a statement on Tuesday, the party said even during the peak of militancy, prayers were never stopped at these two places.
Launching a scathing attack on the BJP without mentioning it, the party said, "Today in the name of so-called normalcy people are being denied their fundamental religious rights."
Security and law and order in J&K UT lies with Lt Governor not with the ruling National Conference government.
Eid-ul-Fitr, a Muslim religious festival marking the end of the fasting month of Ramadan, was celebrated in the Valley on Monday.
While the Jamia Masjid and Eidgah were barred for prayers, authorities confined Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, chief priest of Kashmir, to his home. Mirwaiz took to social media saying he has been put under house arrest and barred from offering prayers. He denounced the move saying it is an infringement in the religious affairs of Muslims.
Mirwaiz was expecting to lead prayers at the Eidgah. Since abrogation of Article 370 on August 5, 2019, Eid prayers are not allowed at the Eidgah for fear of law and order problems.
Last week BJP leader Darakhshan Andrabi, who heads J&K Waqaf Board, inaugurated pulpit at the Eidgah. The move generated hope among people that this time Eid prayers will be allowed at the Eidgah. But on Sunday Andrabi said that Eid prayers are barred at Eidgah due to “ongoing construction.”
Without naming Andrabi, the NC said, “To make matters worse, the same authorities who inaugurated the pulpit for photo ops failed to permit the very prayer it was meant for. This hypocrisy is both ridiculous and shameful.” “True peace,” the NC said, “cannot be achieved through hollow rhetoric or token gestures. “It demands trust, inclusivity, and respect for people’s faith and traditions,” the party said.
