Seven Myanmar nationals deported from Mizoram, handed to Chin rebel group

Aizawl, May 18 (UNI) Seven Myanmar nationals, believed to be refugees taking shelter in Champhai town along the India-Myanmar border, were recently detained by local volunteers of the Young Mizo Association (YMA) and handed over to an armed Chin insurgent group in neighbouring Myanmar, YMA leaders said.
The individuals, all ethnic Chins from Myanmar’s Chin State, were reportedly staying in Champhai district, which shares a porous and mountainous border with Myanmar. One of them, identified as Bawineisuma alias Lalneihchhunga, had been residing in the Dinthar locality of Champhai town and was taken into custody after he allegedly threatened locals with a machete, claiming to be a member of the Chin Defence Force (CDF), a militia commonly referred to in the border region as mipui sipai or “people’s soldier”.
“Bawineisuma’s behaviour was seen as a threat to the peace of the locality. He was detained by our volunteers after moving around with a dao (machete) and acting in a threatening manner,” said a local YMA leader over the phone.
He added that the individual was also frequently seen in military-style camouflage outfits, further alarming residents.
In a separate incident, six other Myanmarese nationals — Vanlalrinchhana, Bawihliana, Siangthachhung, K D Liana, Vanbawiha and Sangbawihthang — were caught by YMA volunteers at a farmhouse in the New Champhai locality. They were allegedly consuming alcohol in public, a violation of Mizoram’s prohibition laws and community norms.
The six also claimed to be members of the Chin National Front (CNF) and its armed wing, the Chin National Army (CNA), stating they were on leave.
Following their detention, the YMA handed over all seven individuals to the Mizoram Police, who later transferred their custody to the CNF / CNA authorities across the border in Chin State.
Champhai district has seen a significant influx of refugees from Myanmar since the military coup in February 2021, with many ethnic Chin people fleeing violence and persecution. While Mizoram has provided informal refuge to thousands, tensions have occasionally flared over issues of law and order.
