SFI "begs" to pay for poor MPs & MLAs to expose hypocrisy of s

Shimla, Apr 1 (UNI) The Students’ Federation of India (SFI) staged a unique protest at Himachal Pradesh University on Tuesday, mocking the state government’s decision to increase MPs and MLAs’ salaries by 24 per cent while ignoring the economic struggles of common people.
Holding posters that read, “Donate for Poor MLAs”, the students sarcastically appealed for donations, highlighting the insensitivity of lawmakers who prioritized their own financial gains over public welfare amid rising inflation.
SFI unit president Ankush Rana and secretary Ritesh criticized the government for worsening the economic crisis while lavishing perks on MLAs.
“Our MLAs are so poor and helpless that they need a 24% salary hike to survive,” they said, ridiculing the move.
The protest aimed to expose how elected representatives, instead of addressing inflation, unemployment, and fund cuts in education and health, chose self-serving policies. Ankush pointed out that while the government pleads financial constraints to justify slashing budgets for essential services, it happily raises MLAs’ salaries and allowances.
“The public elects leaders to serve them, but this government only serves itself,”* he said. The protest resonated with students and citizens, who echoed concerns over misplaced priorities—luxury SUVs for politicians while ordinary families struggle with soaring prices.
The SFI’s campaign is part of a broader movement to shame central and state governments for approving hefty salary hikes for MPs and MLAs. Students across Himachal carried placards sarcastically urging donations for “impoverished” lawmakers who “cannot afford luxury cars” despite public hardship.
The satirical tone drew public support, with many praising SFI for calling out politicians’ hypocrisy. Notably, both BJP and Congress lawmakers supported the salary hike, revealing a disconnect between the political class and the people. Even in 2016, former Left MLA Rakesh Singha had opposed a similar move under BJP rule, proving that mainstream parties consistently prioritize self-interest over public welfare.
The SFI’s protest underscores a growing anger against anti-people policies. As inflation cripples households, the government’s indifference only fuels demands for accountability. If leaders continue ignoring the masses, such creative dissent will only grow louder.
It is worthwhile to mention that Unions Government and State government came with new bill un the Parliament and Himachal Pradesh seeking hike in their salary without much discussion.
