Chennai, May 31 (UNI) In Madurai for th DMK General Council meet,
Tami Nadu Chief Minister and DMK President M K Stalin on Saturday
night met his elder brother M K Azhagiri, who was expelled from the
Party more than a decade back at his residence.
Mr Azhagiri has been in political hibernation since his expulsion from
the party in March 2014 by his father and party supremo M Karunanidhi
in the run up to the Lok Sabha elections for opposing an alliance with
the DMDK led by actor-politician Vijayakanth then.
Both Mr Stalin and Mr Azhagiri had met earlier on a couple of occasions.
After holding a massive road show and inaugurating a life size bronze
statue of first Madurai Mayor Muthu, Mr Stalin drove down to Mr Azhagiri's
residence where he was affectionately received by his family members.
Reports tricking in said Mr Stalin had a dinner with his elder brother and
his family members.
As reports had been doing the rounds that Mr Stalin might call on his elder
brother and former DMK South Zone Organisational Secretary, a large number
of party supporters and media personnel gathered in front of Mr Azhagiri's
residence.
A Madurai strongman, who played a key role in DMK's victories in several
elections, Mr Azhagiri was elected to the Lok Sabha from Madurai in 2009
and became the Union Minister for Chemicals and Fertilizers in the Congress-
led UPA-1 Cabinet.
He won in his maiden electoral foray from the Madurai Parliamentary constituency
securing 430,688 votes and defeating P. Mohan from CPM, who secured 290,157
votes.
However, following his strident Opposition to DMK's proposed alliance with DMDK
he was permanently expelled from the party in 2014 and since then he has been
keeping away from politics.
Though he had initially made some critical remarks about Mr Stalin after his removal
from the DMK, he later lauded his leadership skills and governance in leading the
DMK after the demise of five-time Chief Minister M Karunanidhi in August 2018.
