Solan adopts strict measures to prevent forest fires

Solan, Apr 1(UNI) In a proactive move to curb the rising incidents of forest fires, the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), Solan, has issued a stringent order prohibiting the burning of grasslands (Ghasnies) during the fire season from April 1 to June 30, 2025.
The order, issued by District Magistrate-cum-Chairperson Manmohan Sharma, mandates that grassland owners must obtain prior approval from the Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) if burning is necessary, adhering strictly to the 100-metre rule from state forest land.
The decision comes in response to increasing anthropogenic forest fires, which pose severe threats to climate, wildlife, and human lives. Studies indicate that uncontrolled burning of grasslands, dry bushes, or pine leaves often escalates into devastating forest fires, causing irreversible damage to Himachal Pradesh's natural wealth.
Under Section 34 of the Disaster Management Act, 2005, the order directs all Sub-Divisional Magistrates (SDMs), forest officials, and the police to ensure strict compliance. Violations will be met with legal action. The directive has been forwarded to key stakeholders, including the Himachal Pradesh government, forest conservators, and the District Public Relations Officer (DPRO) for widespread awareness.
District Magistrate Sharma emphasised the collective responsibility of citizens and authorities in safeguarding forests. "Unattended fires have led to significant ecological and economic losses. This measure aims to mitigate risks during the peak fire season," he stated. UNI ML SSP
