Thousands protest rise of gender discrimination in Bangladesh’s annual ‘Moitree Jatra’ march

Dhaka, May 16 (UNI) Protesting the rising levels of gender discrimination and violence against women in Bangladesh, thousands of people from various walks of life participated in the country’s annual 'Moitree Jatra', a march which called for equal treatment of women.
Participants, including women and men, started gathering on Manik Mia Avenue following the Juma prayer, reports Daily Star.
"We came here in response to the call from women—to let everyone know that we are united when it comes to issues concerning us," said Rehnuma Ahmed, a former teacher at Jahangirnagar University.
"We are not rebuking anyone. There is no shouting or use of slurs. We are here to demonstrate our unity for the cause," she added.
Nazifa Raidah, an NGO worker, said she came to protest all forms of violence against women across the country.
Talking about the state of women’s treatment post the July Uprising, she said, “We continue to see women being harassed and beaten in public, and threatened by mobs. These mobs are being used to confine women to their homes. We are here to protest this violence, for our dignity and equity.”
Participants in the march carried placards with various messages such as ‘No means no,’ ‘It’s never about clothes or belief, just weak men quaking, seeking relief,’ and ‘Resist marital rape.’
The event kicked off with a cultural programme, showcasing performances from individuals of diverse backgrounds.
Following this, an official declaration was read from the stage, outlining the movement's core demands and vision for gender equality and justice.
A procession then made its way to Khamarbari before circling back to Manik Mia Avenue, where the march concluded.
The march was filled with chants, slogans, and a collective call for change, as participants united in their demand for justice and equal rights for women.
