UN report projects Pakistan's GDP growth at 2.3 pc

Islamabad, May 16 (UNI) A United Nations report has projected that Pakistan's GDP is likely to grow by 2.3 percent in 2025-26.
According to the report, the restive South Asian country can expect some “moderate growth, stabilising after a period of economic contraction”.
The report, titled ‘The UN World Economic Situation and Prospects 2025’ attributed this growth to declining inflation, which has allowed most of the region’s central banks to commence or continue monetary easing in 2025.
For Pakistan specifically, the UN highlighted the role of ongoing economic reforms and fiscal consolidation under International Monetary Fund (IMF) guidance. The IMF-supported programmes are focused on enhancing economic governance, managing public debt, and restoring investor confidence, according to Dunya News.
The report stated that the economic performance in the Indian subcontinent was expected to remain robust, with growth projections standing at 5.7% in 2025 and 6% in 2026. This growth is mainly “driven by strong performance in India as well as economic recovery in a few other economies”, including Bhutan, Nepal and Sri Lanka.
However, the organisation has urged caution, saying the US-China trade war has made the global scenario uncertain, and slowed the growth of global GDP to 2.4% in 2025, as opposed to 2.9% in 2024.
The slowdown is expected to impact major economies worldwide including the US, where growth is projected to decline from 2.8% in 2024 to 1.6% in 2025, and the European Union, which is likely to see stagnation with only 1.0% growth amid weak exports and subdued investment.
China’s growth rate has also declined substantially, due to its real estate collapse, recent US tariffs, and the global decoupling of industrial manufacturing to other countries such as India and Vietnam. As such, its growth rate has also been reduced to 4.6%. UNI ANV SSP
