Chennai, Apr 24 (UNI) A new University named after former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister
and DMK Patriarch M Karunanidhi will be set up at Kumbakonam in Thanjavur district,
Chief Minister M K Stalin informed the State Assembly on Thursday.
Replying to PMK Leader G K Mani, Mr Stalin recalled the steps taken by Mr Karunanidhi
for the development and growth of the education sector and said in deference to the wishes
expressed by the member a new University will be set up at Kumbakonam and it will be
named after "Kalaignar" Karunanidhi .
Earlier, speaking in the House, Mr Mani said while there were Universities in the State
named after late CMs A N Annadorai (Anna), M G Ramachandran (MGR) and J Jayalailthaa,
there was no varsity in the name of Mr Karunanidhi.
He also said that though the PMK and the ruling DMK could have divergent views politically,
PMK Founder Dr.S.Ramadoss always have high regards and respect for Mr Karunanidhi and
stressed the need for setting up a University named after him.
Responding to his request, Mr Stalin said a University named after Mr Karunanidhi will soon
be set up at Kumbakonam in Thanjavur district, amid loud thumping of desks by the members
of the Treasury Benches.
