Tourist bitten by dog in Shimla, panic and public resentment mounts

Shimla, May 13 (UNI) Panic gripped Shimla after a tourist from Noida was attacked by a stray dog on the busy Mall Road, marking the second major dog bite case in the town within 48 hours.
The tourist, visiting with his family to escape the scorching plains, was bitten on the leg, causing heavy bleeding. Eyewitnesses said the dog attacked without provocation, knocking the man to the ground.
Former councillor Sanjeev Sood called an ambulance, and the injured tourist was rushed to Deen Dayal Upadhyay Hospital, where doctors administered anti-rabies treatment.
The incident comes just a day after three children were mauled by stray dogs in the Dhalli area. One child remains under treatment at IGMC.
The attacks have reignited public anger and led to protests by councillors in the Shimla Municipal Corporation (SMC). Social worker Karamchand Bhatia also staged a dharna outside the Mayor’s office after his 8-year-old son was bitten.
SMC Health Officer Dr. Chetan Chauhan stated that around 15 cases of dog and monkey bites were reported in Shimla last month. A notification has been issued to the SMC Commissioner to identify and remove aggressive strays from public areas.
However, officials cite restrictions under the Animal Birth Control (ABC) Rules, which allow only sterilisation and vaccination, not relocation or culling of strays.
With the tourist season in full swing, residents and visitors are alarmed by the rising stray dog menace. Locals warn that continued inaction could tarnish Shimla’s reputation as a safe hill station. UNI ML SSP
