Tripura adopts Punjub model for de-addiction

Agartala, Apr 2 (UNI) Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha on Wednesday expressed grave concern in the Tripura Assembly over the increasing incidents of HIV/AIDS and other blood-transmitted diseases among the youngsters and said that his government has adopted Outpatient Opioid Assisted Treatment (OAAT) model of Punjab for de-addiction.
He said the health administration has attached the highest priority to educating people, especially students, about the danger of drug consumption and injecting drugs in a group using a single syringe. The recent report indicated an abnormal growth of drug users in the state, including educational institutions, corresponding to the increase of HIV positive patients.
Dr Saha informed that three new satellite Opioid Substitution Therapy (OST) centres have been operational in Dhalai and South districts of Tripura from September 2024 to January 2025 to provide oral substitution therapy to intravenous drug users, reducing the incidence of HIV, Hepatitis B, and Hepatitis C through needle and syringe sharing.
“A total of 18 Primary Health Centres / Community Health Centres in the West district and Urban Primary Health Centres have been approved for conversion into OST Centres, following OAAT model of Punjab to provide oral substitution and de-addiction therapy to intravenous drug addicts,” the Chief Minister stated.
As many as seven stand-alone OST Centres run by the professionals of National AIDS Control Agency in the state along with 19 satellite OST centres have been running with the support of the state government and providing substitution therapy to mainstream injecting drug users.
As of January 2025, a total of 5,520 injection drug users have received services from OST centres and of these, 612 have completed treatment and returned to the mainstream of healthy, normal lives, the Chief Minister added.
Tripura AIDS Control Society held a sensitization programme on HIV / AIDS that has been conducted with the principals, head teachers, and headmistresses of 220 schools in the state where the trend of injecting drug use has been identified.
