War against drugs: APP arrests 2,619, seizes contraband worth Rs 75 crore in 5 yrs

Itanagar, Apr 3 (UNI) In its resolute fight against the narcotics menace, the Arunachal Pradesh Police (APP) has arrested 2,619 individuals (including 534 since launch of Operation Dawn in November 2023), and seized contraband worth Rs 75 crore over the past 5 years.
This crackdown is part of the state’s intensified war against drugs, aimed at dismantling drug networks and ensuring a drug-free society.
“Since 2019, the sustained efforts of the Arunachal Pradesh Police in tackling drug-related crimes have resulted in the registration of 1,452 cases and the arrest of 2,619 individuals. A total of 18,600 kilograms of psychotropic substances valued at Rs 75 crores have been seized,” a police spokesperson said on Thursday.
Additionally, law enforcement authorities have destroyed 56,654.69 acres of illicit opium poppy plantations and eradicated 1,723.271 acres of cannabis cultivation, dealing a major blow to the drug trade in the region, he said.
The officer further said that the ongoing fight against narcotics witnessed a significant boost with the launch of ‘Operation Dawn’ on 8th November 2023. Since its initiation, the operation has led to the registration of 354 cases, arrest of 534 individuals, and the seizure of 9,557 kilograms of narcotic substances, with an estimated market value of Rs 38 crore.
“The Arunachal Pradesh Police remains committed to its mission of making the state drug-free and crime-free with unwavering support from the government and the citizens,” the spokesperson said, adding that authorities vowed to sustain their crackdown on drug cartels and strengthen enforcement efforts.
