Agartala, May 18 (UNI) Tripura government on Saturday appointed the 1994 batch IPS and well-known fraud examiner Anurag as the new DGP of the state, replacing the 1988 batch IPS Amitabh Ranjan ahead of his retirement.
According to reports, soon after his appointment, Anurag took over the charge as DGP at night. His appointment as chief made the rank and file of police happy, and there were celebrations in different police units, including police headquarters.
Anurag, a postgraduate in food technology from CFTRI, Mysore, holds a master's degree in police management from Osmania University and a PG diploma in cyber crimes from NALSAR University of Law, Hyderabad. He is a certified fraud examiner from ACFE, USA.
Anurag has served the Tripura police in various capacities for over 30 years, from Sub-Divisional Police Officer to Director General (Intelligence). During 2003-04, he was in the UN Mission of Peace in Kosovo, and between 2005 and 2013, he served in the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
Thereafter, he returned to Tripura for three years, and again in 2016, he served as Inspector General, Research and Correctional Administration, Bureau of Police Research and Development, and Inspector General (Personnel) in the Central Industrial Security Force, besides Joint Director and Additional Director in the CBI, till he returned to Tripura in late 2023.
Anurag was expected to be DGP (head of police force) as soon as he returned, as Tripura police had been suffering from a crisis during Ranjan’s tenure, allegedly due to large-scale corruption and nepotism at the top.
The Chief Minister was not happy with Ranjan, as the general law and order situation was also not satisfactory; police stations were reportedly instructed not to register FIRs unless extremely necessary to portray low incidences of crime, police sources revealed.
“Ranjan was also accused of falsely libeling charges against his predecessor, V S Yadav, but after failing to get any evidence to prove the allegations, he dismissed as many as five policemen from the service, as they all refused to make fabricated statements to implicate Yadav. Under his instructions, police registered a case against a local journalist who wrote against Ranjan’s corruption and misdeeds,” a home department official stated.
