Bengal: Police summon dismissed teacher over Thursday's violent protest

Kolkata, May 18 (UNI) Bidhannagar police station (North) has summoned one of the dismissed teachers to appear before the investigation officers on Monday in relation to the violent agitation in front of Bikash Bhavan on Thursday in which the police personnel had to use batons to disperse the protestors to evacuate gheraoed government officials.
One of the leading faces of the teachers' protests, Mehabooba Mondal said on Sunday that they will consult with the lawyers and then decide whether to attend the police summons or not. He said the "police summons is as good as a whip, indicating either to vacate or face arrest," Mondal told reporters.
Sources said the Bidhannagar police (North) has identified 15 such protesters to summon them in phases regarding Thursday's incident in which both the teachers and police personnel were injured.
The dismissed teachers had gheraoed Bikash Bhava, the headquarters of state education department at New Town in east Kolkata, and refused to leave until they got verbal assurance from state Education Minister Bratya Basu on the stand of the government.
The dismissed teachers, who claimed they are qualified and not tainted, are demanding they must be reinstated in their jobs and have refused to sit anymore for examinations in the process of new appointment.
"We lost our jobs due to the systemic fraud of the government," said another protestor.
Union Minister and state BJP president Sukanta Majumdar on Sunday said they were behind the dismissed but qualified teachers and claimed the state government was responsible for the job loss of the qualified candidates due to the cash-for-jobs scam.
He said the BJP's youth wing has organised a protest rally on Tuesday and may also gherao the police for resorting to lathi charge on the teachers.
Over 1,000 dismissed teachers — identified as not specifically tainted and allowed to return to schools until December — have been staging a sit-in outside Bikash Bhavan for the past 12 days as part of the 'Bikash Bhawan Abhijan' against the School Education Department and the School Service Commission (SSC) for filing a review petition in the Supreme Court allegedly without consulting them.
Mehaboob Mondol said "They did not consult us or our lawyers before filing the review petition."
Another protester said, "Why should we suffer when we gave no bribes? Why should we appear in the examination again? We got the job only after taking the exam."
Nearly 26,000 teaching and non-teaching staff recruited by the SSC had lost their jobs following a Supreme Court order.
