Imports from Bangladesh in Tripura stopped after DGFT ban

Agartala, May 18 (UNI) The land customs authority has stopped all imports from Bangladesh from Sunday across all five land customs stations (LCS), after the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT), Ministry of Commerce, issued a ban on imports a day ago.
DGFT banned the import of six items, including ready-made garments, processed food items (chips, snacks, and biscuits), rubber products, plastic goods, and wooden furniture from Bangladesh through Tripura, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Assam, and West Bengal.
The notification explicitly prohibits the import of all types of ready made garments from Bangladesh via any land port along the India-Bangladesh border. Also, imports of these goods will now be restricted to seaports at Nhava Sheva (Mumbai) and Kolkata.
“This move primarily targets key LCSs in Tripura, Assam, Meghalaya, Mizoram, as well as two LCSs in West Bengal—Changrabandha and Fulbari. The imports of fruit and fruit-flavoured drinks, carbonated beverages, processed food products, cotton and cotton yarn waste, and certain plastic and PVC finished goods (excluding industrial pigments, dyes, plasticisers, and granules) have also been banned from entering through land routes in India,” officials of Land port authority said.
However, the restrictions excluded essential commodities like fish, LPG, edible oils, and crushed stone, which will continue to be allowed entry into India.
Moreover, goods originating in Bangladesh but transiting through India en route to Nepal and Bhutan remain exempt from these curbs, officials stated.
This move comes in the aftermath of India’s withdrawal of the transshipment facility previously granted to Bangladesh on April 9, 2025. The transshipment facility, initially introduced in June 2020, had permitted Bangladesh to use Indian ports and airports—including the Delhi airport—to export goods to the Middle East, Europe, and other regions, except Nepal and Bhutan in a significant boost for Bangladesh’s trade.
The imposition of port restrictions and withdrawal of the transshipment facility are seen as part of a broader re-calibration in India-Bangladesh relations, which have faced strains over issues including minority rights in Bangladesh and economic competition, particularly in the textile sector.
Meanwhile, All Tripura Merchant Association welcomed the decision of DGFT and said the import ban would in no way affect India.
Its president, Tusar Kanti Chakraborty, said, “Rather, it will impact Bangladesh's economy, as all the listed products are been manufactured in better quality in our country. We imported them from Bangladesh because of geographical proximity to reduce carrying time.”
He further stated that the import-export business with Bangladesh has been affected since last August after the departure of the Hasina government.
Indian authorities and trade bodies were desperate to maintain the relationship with Bangladesh, but after the recent statement of its Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus in China, there was no point in aligning with them, Chakraborty added.
