UP-AGREES scheme to revolutionise agriculture in Purvanchal

Lucknow, April 1 (UNI) The Uttar Pradesh-Agriculture Growth and Rural Enterprises Ecosystem Strengthening (UP-AGREES) Scheme being run with the help of the World Bank is all set to revolutionise agriculture and will also promote tourism in the Vindhya region like Kashi and Prayagraj, official sources said here on Tuesday.
Sources said that acting on the recommendations of NITI Aayog, the government is gearing up to develop the Varanasi and Vindhya region along the lines of the Kashi-Prayagraj Dharma Kshetra and the State Capital Region (SCR).
Sources said that this strategic move is expected to boost tourism significantly. "Besides, the region will not lag behind in industrialisation, ensuring comprehensive economic growth. The Dharm Kshetra will cover approximately 22,393 square kilometres and include Kashi (Varanasi), Prayagraj, Chandauli, Ghazipur, Jaunpur, Mirzapur and Bhadohi. The total population of this area will be around 2.5 crore," they said.
Sources said that according to NITI Aayog's plan, this region will not only see the development of religious sites but also industrial zones and knowledge parks, based on local traditions and needs. "The government has already finalised a foolproof plan and the ambitious UP-AGREES scheme has already started," they said.
Sources said that to accelerate these projects, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath is prioritising connectivity. "The four-lane road from Gorakhpur to Varanasi is almost complete and the Gorakhpur Link Expressway, which connects to Purvanchal Expressway, is also finished and may be inaugurated next month," they said.
Sources said that besides, a 100-km expressway linking Chandauli to Ghazipur, costing about Rs 7,000 crore, will further boost development of the region. "Purvanchal will also benefit from the planned national highway from Gorakhpur to Siliguri," they said.
Sources said that besides, an expressway connecting Prayagraj to Sonbhadra under the Ganga Expressway expansion will help many districts in the region. It may be noted that UP is home to the country's only inter-state waterway, which connects Prayagraj to Haldia and the government has announced plans to expand it further.
Sources said that the agriculture and animal husbandry will also see major improvements with the upcoming Kushinagar Agricultural University and Veterinary College in Gorakhpur, which will promote research and innovation, benefiting farmers.
Furthermore, the One District, One Product (ODOP) initiative is helping farmers in branding their agricultural products. For example, Pratapgarh's amla, Kushinagar's bananas, Ayodhya's jaggery and Siddharth Nagar's black salt rice have gained national and international recognition, increasing profits for local farmers.
Since ODOP is a priority for CM Yogi, he actively monitors and promotes it. The government also provides facilities for production, packaging, branding, and marketing through Common Facility Centers (CFCs), ensuring continuous growth for both these products and farmers associated with them.
