Srinagar, May 9 (UNI) As multiple attacks on Indian territory by Pakistan Armed Forces during the last night were “effectively repulsed and a befitting reply was given,” a woman was killed and four others injured in cross-border shelling in the Uri sector of Baramulla district.
Officials said last night Pakistan intensified artillery fire across the Line of Control (LoC) in Kashmir in which nearly 50 structures were damaged in Baramulla and Kupwara districts.
The intense cross border shelling erupted last evening moments after Pakistan escalated the skirmish by attacking Jammu with drones and missiles.
Officials said a 38-year-old woman identified as Nargis Bashir of Rajarwani Uri, was killed when the vehicle she was travelling in was hit by a shell fired from Pakistan.
The woman and some of her family members had boarded a vehicle to flee from the village after artillery shelling from Pakistan.
While Nargis was killed, her three relatives were also injured in the explosion. The three were shifted to Baramulla hospital where condition of all of them is stated to be stable.
The entire Uri sector witnessed intense cross-border shelling overnight, with mortar and artillery shells landing deep inside civilian areas. The heavy exchange of fire continued unabated until morning, causing panic among residents.
Similar shelling was reported in north Kashmir’s Kupwara district, where the intensity remained high. Pakistani shells landed in several villages, including Chowkibal, Panzgam, Soonthipora, Dolipora, Batpora, and Rawathpora, forcing residents to take shelter indoors.
Earlier on the intervening night of Thursday and Friday, Pakistani forces launched multiple attacks using drones and other munitions along the entire western border.
The Indian Army said Pak troops also resorted to numerous cease fire violations (CFVs) along the Line of Control in Jammu and Kashmir.
“The drone attacks were effectively repulsed and a befitting reply was given to the CFVs,” Army ADGPI said in post on X
“Indian Army remains committed to safeguarding the sovereignity and territorial integrity of the Nation. All nefarious designs will be responded with force,” Army said.
The situation along the LoC continues to remain tense. Exchange of fire between Indian and Pakistani armies has been ongoing since the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack. While the past fortnight had seen no casualties, hostilities escalated after India carried out multiple strikes across the border.
The J & K government has already shut all educational institutes in view of the prevailing situation.
