Young Mizo Association provides Rs 5.11 lakh aid to fire-affected Mizos in Bangladesh

Aizawl, May 16 (UNI) The Young Mizo Association (YMA) Central Committee has extended humanitarian aid amounting to Rs 5.11 lakh to 18 ethnic Mizo families from Mahmuam village in Bangladesh’s Chittagong Hill Tracts, whose homes were destroyed by a fire on February 24, 2025.
The affected families lost not only their homes but also all their belongings in the blaze. The relief fund was handed over by YMA President Lalhmachhuana through representatives of the Sajek range YMA unit based in Aizawl. The funds were raised by contributions from various YMA units in Aizawl city.
The fire devastated over 60 houses in Mahmuam village, including 18 belonging to ethnic Mizos. The cause of the fire has not been determined.
The ethnic Mizo community in Bangladesh’s Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHT) has been facing significant challenges due to ongoing military operations by the Bangladesh Army. These actions target the Kuki-Chin National Army (KNA), a militant group demanding autonomy for indigenous communities in the region. The unrest has forced over 2,000 ethnic Mizos to seek refuge in the Lawngtlai district of southern Mizoram since November 2022. This district shares borders with Bangladesh and Myanmar, providing a critical sanctuary for displaced Mizos.
The situation underscores the continued instability in the CHT region and highlights the efforts by organizations like YMA to support displaced and vulnerable communities across international borders.
