'The Mahatma & The Poet'; healthy debate and criticism are bedrocks of democracy

New Delhi, Oct 1 (UNI) Paying rich tribute to the father of the nation ahead of Gandhi Jayanti, the Delhi Chapter of the Sarvodaya International Trust, along with India International Centre held a special evening, "The Mahatma & the Poet," featuring readings from the historic correspondence between Mahatma Gandhi and Rabindranath Tagore.

Notably, Mahatma Gandhi’s granddaughter Tara Bhattacharya, grandson Gopal Gandhi and other family members were present on the occasion.


Addressing the gathering, Justice Anup Jairam Bhambhani, Judge of the High Court of Delhi and the chief guest, emphasized that the communing between Mahatma Gandhi and Rabindranath Tagore stands as a timeless model for constructive disagreement.


He underlined the importance of pluralism and open dialogue in today’s world, reminding the audience that healthy debate and criticism are the bedrocks of democracy.

Dr. Rakhshanda Jalil, Chairperson of the Sarvodaya International Trust, New Delhi chapter welcomed the gathering that comprised the Trustees of the SIT, as well as eminent personalities from the field of education, science, and also Gandhians.

The soul stirring readings, "The Mahatma & the Poet," presented by Sunit Tandon and Satvik Varma, showed how the two great men could disagree deeply yet engage with one another with warmth, reason and reverence.

The interplay of Gandhi’s political and ethical vision with Tagore’s humanistic and universal outlook made the presentation thought provoking and deeply relevant to the contemporary times.

Dr. Jyoti Bose, Managing Trustee, SIT, while proposing the vote of thanks, highlighted that the exchanges between the two great personalities reflected their intellectual and respectful dissent while retaining deep affection for each other, which is the need of today’s times.
