'UDAN' strengthens mental health services in Nagpur: Maha CM

Mumbai, May 25 (UNI) Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said on Sunday that the Nagpur district has taken a big leap in the field of mental health due to the UDAN initiative and this initiative will be a model for other districts in the country.
The district-level mental health programme UDAN has achieved remarkable success in Nagpur district and due to this initiative, mental health services have reached rural areas more effectively, he informed.
The UDAN initiative, launched by the Maharashtra government in collaboration with Tata Trusts in 2018, aims to increase public awareness of mental health, provide easy services in rural and urban areas, increase the number of psychiatrists, counsellors, provide treatment outside hospitals and provide specialised mental services, which are the objectives of the National Mental Health Policy, he informed.
The UDAN programme is in line with this mental health policy and is the first initiative of the Maharashtra government, he further informed.
Under this initiative, two sub-district hospitals, 10 rural hospitals, 56 primary health centres, 778 gram panchayats and 1,724 ASHA workers in 13 talukas of the district have been included.
In this, a door-to-door mental health survey has been conducted in the villages through tabs with the help of ASHA workers, and the survey of 6,22,431 citizens has been completed till date, the Chief Minister said.
So far, 9,110 mental health outpatient sessions have been organised, 9,472 patients have been treated, and a total of 92,423 counselling and treatment services have been provided. Of these patients, 66 percent of the patients have fully recovered, and 24 percent of the patients are undergoing treatment.
Out of the 69 service centres in Nagpur district, services are being provided by the District Mental Health Programme Team at 13 centres and by trained medical officers at 56 centres, Fadnavis said.
Monthly awareness programmes are being implemented in 465 villages of the district in collaboration with Gram Panchayats, Bhajan Mandals, Shetkari Groups and Women's Self-Help Groups.
In addition, UDAN team has visited the homes of 11,936 patients and conducted counselling sessions, while 1,724 ASHA workers have been given special training on the subject of mental health and awareness, he added.
