11-year-old girl allegedly sexually assaulted at tailor’s shop in Sadar Bazaar

New Delhi, Sep 21 (UNI) An 11-year-old girl was allegedly sexually assaulted by a tailor at his shop in north Delhi’s Sadar Bazaar after he allegedly restrained her, gagged her, and threatened her with scissors when she tried to call for help, police said on Monday.
The incident came to light on the night of September 16 after a PCR call was received regarding the alleged assault. Police teams from Sadar Bazaar police station, accompanied by the ACPs of Sadar Bazaar and the Women Police Station, reached the spot.
According to police, the girl had left her home around 11 pm to buy stationery when the accused, identified as Maqsood, allegedly took her into his tailoring shop nearby. He is accused of restraining the minor and sexually assaulting her.
A neighbour said the girl had told her family that she was going to a nearby shop. When she did not return, her mother began searching for her.
The neighbour alleged that the tailor intercepted the girl as she was walking towards the shop and took her inside.
Another local resident, Mohammad Iqbal Qureshi, alleged that the accused tied the girl to a chair, gagged her and threatened her with scissors to stop her from raising an alarm.
Mujamil Qureshi, another neighbour, said the girl's mother suspected that her daughter was somewhere nearby and asked a neighbour to look out for her.
According to Mujamil, the girl was later seen being pushed out of the shop after the area became deserted. A neighbour spotted her and alerted her mother, following which the girl allegedly recounted what had happened.
Residents claimed the girl had been inside the shop for around one to one-and-a-half hours. They also said the accused had been running the tailoring shop in the area for nearly 15 years.
Police said a case has been registered at the North District Women Police Station under relevant provisions of law. The accused has been arrested and was sent to judicial custody the same day.
Further investigation is underway, police said.
