2025 SCO Film Festival set to take place from July 3 in China’s Chongqing municipality

Chongqing, June 9 (UNI) The five-day 2025 SCO (the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation) Film Festival will take place from July 3 in Yongchuan District, southwest China's Chongqing Municipality.

The festival will highlighting the latest advancements in film technology and production across all member states, local authorities announced Monday.

The upcoming film festival aims to promote people-to-people exchanges and cooperation between SCO member states, the municipal government said at a press conference.

The event will feature 11 major activities, including film screenings, cooperation forums, a film technology exhibition, and a gala concert. Ten awards will be presented at the event, including ‘Best Film’ and ‘Best Director’, according to Qin Zhengui, deputy director of the China Film Administration.

The organising committee has received 27 film submissions from SCO member states, with a curated selection to be screened during the event.

Yongchuan, located in the western part of Chongqing, has emerged as a burgeoning hub for film technology innovation in recent years.

The district is now home to over 100 film and TV enterprises and boasts cutting-edge production facilities, including a 3,000-square-meter virtual production stage and a 5,000-square-meter standardised soundstage.

In an earlier report by Chinese state media Global Times, Sun Jiashan, an associate researcher at the Central Academy of Culture and Tourism Administration said "Film exchanges, especially film co-productions, have played an important role for all SCO countries as they share much similarity in culture, history and tradition.”

Taking the Chinese movie ‘Xuan Zang’, a biographical movie based on the monk Xuanzang's journey to India during the Tang Dynasty (618-907), as an example, he said "Buddhism, a common cultural heritage between China and India.”

Adding that it is a crucial resource for bilateral cultural exchanges, he noted adding that these similar shared cultural heritages can provide opportunities to member states like China and India on film cooperation.

"China is now the world's second largest film market and Bollywood movies are known to the world for their unique character. There is much more space for us all to expand," said Sun.
