35th Ziro Bird Walk records 15 species, spots rare Red-collared Dove

Itanagar, Oct 31 (UNI)The autumn edition of the 35th Ziro Bird Walk, held at Pigey Aji traditional farmland in Ziro Valley, attracted nature enthusiasts, birders and conservationists, with participants recording 15 bird species, including the rare sighting of a Red-collared Dove.
The bird walk was led by wildlife enthusiast Koj Mama and other organisers, with support from the Department of Environment and Forests, Arunachal Tourism, the Department of Information and Public Relations, Arunachal Pradesh Birding Club and local partners.
Participants spotted several regional bird species, including the Northern Lapwing, Pacific Golden Plover, Himalayan Buzzard and Eurasian Sparrowhawk.
The sighting of the Red-collared Dove was a major highlight, as birding guides and researchers noted that the species, generally associated with lower altitudes, is rarely observed at such high-altitude locations.
The Pigey Aji farmland is a seasonal habitat for migratory birds and provides an important setting for birdwatching and community-based conservation activities.
Organisers said the Ziro Bird Walk, founded by Koj Mama and fellow nature enthusiasts, has evolved into a community initiative to promote awareness of the valley’s biodiversity and encourage public participation in conservation.
The seasonal event continues to bring together local residents, birders and nature lovers to appreciate Ziro’s rich avian diversity.
