473 snakebite victims treated in Haryana this year with timely ASV: Sumita Misra

Panchkula, Sep 19 (UNI) As many as 473 snakebite victims have been treated in Haryana this year with timely administration of anti-snake venom (ASV), while 1,526 such patients have received treatment across the state over the past five years, Additional Chief Secretary, Health and Family Welfare, Dr Sumita Misra said on Saturday.
Jhajjar and Ambala have reported the highest number of snakebite cases this year, she said.
Misra said the life-saving anti-snake venom is available free of cost at all Primary Health Centres (PHCs), Community Health Centres (CHCs), and Civil Hospitals across Haryana, with stock levels continuously monitored to prevent shortages.
The Health Department said it has also noticed a shift in public behaviour, with more snakebite victims being taken directly to hospitals instead of approaching faith healers or relying on “jhaad-phoonk” and other traditional practices that can dangerously delay medical treatment.
Citing a recent case, a press release issued by the Health Department said that a 20-year-old woman in Palwal was bitten by a snake while working in a field. She was rushed to hospital, administered anti-venom without delay and subsequently discharged after recovery.
Misra stressed that every minute after a snakebite can be crucial and urged people to seek medical treatment without delay.
The department advised that a snakebite victim should be kept calm, unnecessary movement restricted and the affected limb kept still and below heart level while the patient is taken to the nearest hospital. Watches, rings, bangles and tight clothing should be removed from the affected limb as swelling may occur.
If possible without approaching the snake, a photograph can be taken from a safe distance to help doctors identify it. People should, however, never attempt to catch or kill the snake and should instead alert trained snake rescuers or the Forest Department, it said.
The department cautioned people against tying a tight rope or tourniquet around the affected limb, cutting the bite wound, attempting to suck out venom or applying ice, chilli, oil or traditional pastes. Alcohol or other intoxicants should also not be given to the victim.
It particularly warned against wasting the critical treatment window by taking victims to faith healers instead of a medical facility.
As preventive measures, the department advised people to keep homes and surrounding areas free of garbage and debris that could provide shelter to rodents and snakes. People working in fields or stepping outdoors at night should wear shoes and long clothing and carry a torch.
Residents have also been informed against sleeping directly on the ground. The use of mosquito nets, sealing openings in walls and doors and proper storage of foodgrains can further reduce the risk of snakes entering homes, the department said.
Misra said the state is focusing on continuous monitoring of anti-snake venom stocks, public awareness and prompt hospital treatment, with the objective of bringing preventable snakebite deaths down to zero.
