98 children undergo free surgeries under congenital disorder campaign in Bihar

Patna, Oct 16 (UNI) A total of 98 children with congenital conditions such as cleft lip, cleft palate and tongue-tie have undergone free surgeries at various hospitals across Bihar under a special initiative of the state.

Health Department, officials said here on Friday that the surgeries had been performed till October 15 as part of a special campaign being conducted from October 2 to November 14, to provide timely treatment to children affected by these conditions.
Health Minister Nishant Kumar said the objective of the initiative was to ensure that every child affected by congenital conditions receives quality treatment free of cost.
He said conditions such as cleft lip and cleft palate could pose significant challenges for children and their families, adding that the special campaign was an important step towards improving their quality of life. The government was committed to ensuring that no needy child was deprived of treatment, he added.
The campaign was launched at Patna Medical College and Hospital (PMCH) on October 2, with 12 major medical institutions across the state brought under its ambit.
According to the department, Prashant Charitable Hospital in Muzaffarpur recorded the highest number of surgeries at 26, followed by PMCH, Patna, and Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College and Hospital (JLNMCH), Bhagalpur, with 17 and 11 surgeries, respectively.
AIIMS Patna also reported 11 surgeries, while Mediversal Hospital, Patna, recorded eight. Seven children each underwent surgery at Sri Krishna Medical College and Hospital (SKMCH), Muzaffarpur, and Anugrah Narayan Magadh Medical College and Hospital (ANMMCH), Gaya.
Five surgeries were performed at Nalanda Medical College and Hospital (NMCH), Patna, four at Kurji Holy Family Hospital, Patna, and two at Darbhanga Medical College and Hospital (DMCH).
The initiative follows a five-year agreement signed between the State Health Society, Bihar, and Smile Train India on August 25 this year to provide free treatment to children affected by cleft lip and cleft palate.
Teams under the National Health Mission''s Rashtriya Bal Swasthya Karyakram (RBSK) are identifying affected children and referring them to designated hospitals for treatment.
The programme is aimed at ensuring access to specialised surgical care for children from economically disadvantaged families, reducing their financial burden and enabling them to lead healthier lives.
