Convictions in corruption cases in Bihar rise 293 pc in 2026: Vigilance DG

Patna, Oct 16 (UNI) Bihar has recorded a significant increase in convictions in corruption cases, with 22 people convicted by October 16 this year, marking a 293 per cent rise over the average annual figure recorded between 2000 and 2024.
Vigilance Investigation Bureau Director General Jitendra Singh Gangwar told news persons here today that the average number of convictions over the 25-year period from 2000 to 2024 stood at 5.6 annually, whereas the figure had reached 22 in 2026 so far, nearly four times the historical average.
He said the pace of registering corruption cases had also accelerated, with an FIR being lodged against an alleged corrupt person every 1.5 days at present. In 2025, the average was one FIR every two days, compared with one FIR every 11.5 days up to 2024.
Gangwar said the bureau was focusing on speeding up investigations and trials, as the average time taken to complete a trial currently stood at around 13 years. Measures being pursued included establishing additional special vigilance courts, ensuring timely examination of witnesses and filing chargesheets without unnecessary delays.
The DG said the average annual registration of cases involving traps, disproportionate assets (DA) and abuse of official position had increased to 124 in 2026, against an average of 73 over the preceding 25-year period, representing a rise of around 70 per cent.
Trap cases, in which public servants are caught allegedly accepting bribes, recorded a particularly sharp increase. Against a historical annual average of 47 cases, the bureau registered 113 such cases by October 16 this year, an increase of around 140 per cent. The figure was expected to reach 142 by the end of the year, he said.
Cases relating to disproportionate assets increased from a long-term annual average of eight to 10 this year, a rise of 25 per cent.
However, only two cases involving abuse of official position were registered in 2026, compared with a historical annual average of 18, according to the DG. He attributed the decline partly to a new legal requirement for obtaining prior departmental approval before registering such cases against public servants, which could cause delays.
Gangwar also highlighted action in cases relating to investigations involving teachers. Over the past 11 years, a total of 1,717 FIRs had been registered in this category, averaging 156 annually. In 2026 alone, 166 cases had been registered so far, he said, informing that the department had recorded an increase of 42 per cent under the relevant comparison.
The Revenue and Land Reforms Department topped the list of departments from which public servants had been caught allegedly accepting bribes in trap operations this year, followed by the police, Panchayati Raj, Health, Education and Tourism departments.
According to the DG, 20 public servants from the Revenue and Land Reforms Department, 17 from the police and 12 from the Panchayati Raj Department had been caught in trap cases during the year.
The average bribe amount seized in trap operations this year stood at Rs 34,667, he said, pointing that such operations had been conducted across districts, with the highest number reported from Patna and its adjoining areas.
The bureau is continuing its drive against corruption, with a focus on increasing detection, securing convictions and reducing delays in the prosecution of cases, Gangwar added.
