AAI to submit formal offer for Lengpui Airport takeover

Aizawl, May 27 (UNI)Union Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu has assured Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma that the Airports Authority of India (AAI) has been directed to formally submit an offer to the Mizoram government for taking over the state-owned Lengpui Airport — the lone airport in the state — with the proposal to be carefully examined by the state authorities.
An official release stated that Lalduhoma called on Naidu in New Delhi, where the two leaders, accompanied by senior AAI officials, discussed the pending takeover as well as the possibility of constructing a new airport in southern Mizoram. They also reviewed plans to establish heliports under the central government’s PM-UDAN Scheme. Naidu assured the chief minister that he would actively pursue the proposal for a new airport in the state’s southern region.
Beyond the immediate issue of airport operations, the meeting also focused on broad aviation sector development in Mizoram, with both leaders agreeing on the need for enhanced connectivity to boost the state’s economic growth.
Later, Lalduhoma also met Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, thanking him for his role in setting up a Mizo Territorial Army Battalion — a move expected to create new employment opportunities for Mizoram’s youth. The battalion is scheduled to be raised by June this year.
During the meeting, Singh informed Lalduhoma that private educational institutions in Mizoram could collaborate with Sainik Schools under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) arrangement, with eligible schools able to apply online for recognition as Sainik Schools.
The Mizoram Chief Minister also took the opportunity to urge the Defence Minister to declare the state’s national and state highways as strategic highways, a step he said would ensure better upkeep and maintenance.
