AAIB expected to submit report on Baramati aircraft crash within a month: Hemant Patil

Pune/New Delhi, Sep 21 (UNI) The Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) is expected to provide a report within a month on the investigation into the Learjet 45XR (VT-SSK) aircraft crash at Baramati on January 28, 2026, that led to the death of then Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar and four others.
Hemant Patil, national president of India Against Corruption (IAC), submitted a representation to the AAIB in New Delhi on Monday seeking details of the current status of the investigation and clarification on whether the final investigation report has been completed or is still under preparation.
Patil told UNI that AAIB has assured him that the report concerning the aircraft accident would be provided within a month.
The crash had claimed the lives of then Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar and four others.
In his representation, Patil sought information on whether safety measures at Baramati Airport had been strengthened following the accident and called for the findings of the investigation and subsequent action by the concerned authorities to be made public.
The AAIB had released a preliminary investigation report on February 28, 2026.
Patil said the report had highlighted issues concerning infrastructure and regulatory oversight at Baramati and other smaller airports.
He also referred to recommendations relating to closer oversight of aircraft operations at smaller airports, improvement of landing and weather-related facilities, and a review of licensing and operational standards applicable to such airports.
Patil said that no further information had been made public regarding the progress of the investigation, implementation of the recommendations or corrective action taken by the concerned authorities after the preliminary report.
He has sought details from the AAIB on the condition and functioning of landing, navigation, communication and weather-related facilities at Baramati Airport at the time of the accident.
He also sought clarification on whether any possible lapses or violations by the airport management or regulatory authorities were examined during the investigation.
Information has also been sought on the airworthiness, maintenance history and inspection records of the VT-SSK aircraft.
Patil asked whether the role, responsibilities, maintenance practices and regulatory compliance of VSR Ventures Pvt. Ltd., associated with the aircraft's maintenance and management, were examined as part of the investigation.
He further sought details on the implementation of recommendations made in the preliminary report and corrective measures taken to strengthen aviation safety at Baramati and other smaller airports.
Patil said the matter was not limited to the investigation of a single accident and that information on the safety issues identified during the investigation and the corrective measures taken would be relevant to public accountability and aviation safety.
Notably, the tragic death of Ajit Pawar in the January 28, 2026 plane crash triggered a massive political realignment in Maharashtra, fundamentally shifting the balance of power within both the ruling coalition and the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP).
Following the crash, to maintain stability within the ruling Mahayuti alliance, Ajit Pawar's wife, Sunetra Pawar, was elevated to the top leadership roles. On January 31, she was sworn in as the first female Deputy Chief Minister of Maharashtra and was subsequently named the National President of the NCP Ajit Pawar faction.
Within days of the accident, some opposition leaders openly questioned the circumstances of the plane crash, suggesting political motivations.
