FDA seizes adulterated food worth Rs 1.36 cr in Maharashtra ahead

Mumbai, Sep 21 (UNI) The Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has seized and destroyed around 32,023 kg/litre of adulterated, substandard and unhygienic food products worth Rs 1.36 crore during a statewide crackdown ahead of the festive season, officials said on Monday.
The special drive was conducted from September 17 to 20 to prevent the sale of adulterated food and ensure food safety during the upcoming festivals, Maharashtra FDA Commissioner Tukaram Mundhe said in a statement. During the operation, officials seized or destroyed food products valued at Rs 1,36,20,735.
The seized material included khawa, mawa, peda, ghee, edible oil, barfi, dry fruits, jaggery, sweets and other dairy products. In a major action at Miraj MIDC in Sangli district, FDA officials seized 1,868 kg of suspected inferior-quality turmeric powder valued at Rs 6.53 lakh for alleged labelling violations and quality concerns.
The department also inspected 64 hotels, restaurants and dhabas across the state. Licences of 12 food establishments were suspended, while 36 establishments were served improvement notices for violating food safety norms.
In a separate crackdown on banned gutkha and pan masala, the FDA registered 14 FIRs and arrested 15 persons. Prohibited stock worth Rs 1,38,74,043 was seized, besides two vehicles valued at around Rs 16 lakh.
The FDA suspended the licences of 10 establishments with immediate effect after inspections revealed serious violations of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006 and prescribed hygiene requirements under Schedule 4.
At the Swiggy Instamart dark store operated by M/s Swinsta ENT Pvt Ltd at Ballard Estate, inspectors reportedly found live rats, rodent droppings, live and dead insects and heavy fungal growth inside refrigeration units. An open toilet near the storage area was also found, raising concerns over possible contamination. The licence of the establishment was suspended indefinitely from September 16.
At M/s Sadguru Sweets and Farsan Mart in Malad East, officials found serious violations of good manufacturing and hygiene practices, including houseflies at the sales counter and risks of chemical contamination.
An inspection of M/s Acculogicx Supply Chain Solutions Pvt Ltd, a warehouse associated with Amazon in Kandivali East, revealed broken flooring, sewage accumulation, storage of non-food chemicals alongside food packaging material and inadequate protective equipment and medical records for food handlers.
The FDA also suspended the licences of M/s Suleman Usman Mithaiwala at Mohammed Ali Road, M/s Nice Enterprises in Chembur, Jain Sweet & Bhelpuri House LLP in Kandivali West and Go Green Food Hospitality in Ghatkopar East, among others.
Large seizure from buses in Chhatrapati SambhajinagarIn Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, surprise checks on Neelkanth Travels and Veer Travels buses led to the seizure of 3,893 kg of sweets, milk analogue and halwa worth Rs 10.45 lakh. The products were allegedly being transported illegally. The seized material included products bearing the brands Radhe, Nandeshwar, Gokul and Shri Govardhan Gold.
FDA teams also carried out enforcement action in Solapur, Pune, Satara, Ahilyanagar and Nashik. In the Nagpur division, two establishments were found selling banned food products. Stock worth Rs 68,804 was seized, two FIRs registered and two persons arrested.
In Amravati, banned/substandard food stock worth Rs 47,600 was seized during the drive. Mundhe said the state government was committed to strict enforcement of food safety laws and warned that violations affecting public health would not be tolerated. UNI AAA CDS
