Abhishek, Gill, Shafali and Charani among ICC September award nominees

New Delhi, Oct 6 (UNI) India batters Abhishek Sharma and Shubman Gill, along with Zimbabwe all-rounder Sikandar Raza, have been nominated for the ICC men’s Player of the Month award for September, while India’s Shafali Verma and Sree Charani and Sri Lanka captain Chamari Athapaththu have made the shortlist for the women’s honour.
Abhishek’s explosive T20I performances against Afghanistan, Gill’s record-breaking ODI exploits and Raza’s all-round contributions against Australia earned them the men’s nominations. In the women’s category, Shafali and Charani played key roles in India’s Asia Cup and Asian Games triumphs, while Athapaththu impressed with both bat and ball as Sri Lanka reached the finals of both competitions.
Abhishek returned to form in the three-match T20I series against Afghanistan, scoring 229 runs at an average of 76.33. After managing just one half-century in his previous 10 T20 innings, he struck an 82 off 32 balls in the opening match before producing a stunning 108 off 45 deliveries in the third T20I. His century came off just 30 balls, the fastest by a batter from a Full Member nation in men’s T20Is.
Gill, meanwhile, began September with a 110 against the West Indies before delivering a career-defining innings in Guwahati. Chasing 406, India completed the second-highest successful run chase in ODI history, with Gill remaining unbeaten on 223 off 133 balls. His knock, which included 26 fours and eight sixes, became the highest individual score in a successful ODI chase.
Raza earned his nomination for a series of important contributions against Australia. He scored 57 in the opening ODI, added 45 in the second and finished unbeaten on 81 in the final match to help Zimbabwe post 271/8. He also picked up two wickets in the series finale.
In the women’s category, Shafali topped the run charts at the Women’s Asia Cup with 236 runs in five innings, including 68 in the final against Sri Lanka. She carried that form into the Asian Games, scoring 188 runs in three innings, including a 49-ball century against Bangladesh in the semifinal. Across seven T20Is in September, she amassed 360 runs at a strike rate of 184.61 and claimed six wickets.
Charani was equally influential with the ball, taking 18 wickets in seven T20Is at an average of 4.83. Her haul included 12 wickets at the Asia Cup and eight at the Asian Games. She also reached a landmark in the ICC Women’s T20I Player Rankings, finishing September with 817 rating points to become the highest-rated bowler in the format’s history.
Athapaththu scored 226 runs and took 14 wickets across seven T20Is. Her standout performance came against Indonesia at the Asia Cup, where she claimed 7/5, including a hat-trick, in one of the most remarkable spells in women’s T20I cricket.
