Actor Imran Khan never joined protest, merely passing by, contends his lawyers

Mumbai, Oct 16 (UNI) Lawyers of Bollywood actor Aamir Khan’s nephew actor Imran Khan, who is a US citizen, claimed today that Imran never participated in any protest held at the August Kranti Marg at Nana Chowk against Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar, but was merely passing through the venue.
Actor Imran Khan has challenged the order issued by the Mumbai police-run Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO), which has asked him to leave India by October 28.
The actor’s plea is expected to be mentioned before a division bench of Bombay High Court, comprising Chief Justice Mahesh Chandra Tripathi and Justice Advait Sethna, for an urgent hearing.
Denying all police allegations, Imran Khan's lawyers Zulfikar Memon, Parvez Memon and Chirag Naik have submitted that their client actor Imran Khan was never part of the protest.
The lawyers contended that actor Imran Khan was merely passing through the Nana Chowk area on October 10, when the protest against CEC Gyanesh Kuman took place.
At that time, barricades were put up there and he was merely standing there and talking to the media, when the police picked him up, his lawyers said.
His lawyers further argued that the actor is being implicated in this case and Imran Khan has no connection whatsoever with the protest or the anti-Gyanesh Kumar demonstration which took place at the venue, when he was passing through the venue.
“He was just passing through. He was seen in the crowd after the barricades were put up. The media immediately started scolding him. He had no intention of participating in any protest or demonstration. He is being unjustly implicated in the matter,” Imran Khan’s lawyers stated.
The Mumbai police notice was sent after actor Imran Khan was detained on October 10 for participating in a street protest at Mumbai’s August Kranti Maidan against CEC Gyanesh Kumar.
After the October 10 protest demonstration, BJP leader Kirit Somaiya lodged a police complaint, in which he alleged that actor Imran Khan, who is a US citizen, breached provisions of the Foreigners Act by participating in a political protest.
Later, the FRRO notice cited Imran Khan’s US citizenship and flagged his participation in the demonstration as a violation of immigration and foreigners regulations.
Actor Imran Khan, is an Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) cardholder.
An OCI card allows eligible foreign nationals of Indian origin to live in India and enjoy long-term privileges, but does not make them Indian citizens or give them political privileges like voting or contesting elections.
