Pune: Wadgaon Budruk residents oppose service road work, warn of agitation

Pune, Oct 16 (UNI) Strongly objecting to the ongoing service road construction near Sun City and Raghunandan Hall in Wadgaon Budruk along the Bengaluru–Mumbai National Highway, Manoj Shankar Dangat, speaking on behalf of Samasta Vadgaon Gavkari, has warned that residents will launch an agitation if the authorities fail to address their concerns.
Dangat said the road was being constructed without adequately considering the difficulties it could create for local residents. He expressed concern over the road's elevation and design, which could affect access to nearby residential societies, schools and other establishments.
Our biggest concern is the safety of schoolchildren, pedestrians and motorists. The present road design could create difficulties for school buses, heavy vehicles and residents accessing nearby housing societies, he said. The authorities must address these concerns before completing the work. Public safety cannot be compromised in the name of development, Dangat said.
He urged the National Highways administration, the Pune Municipal Corporation and other concerned authorities to conduct an immediate joint inspection of the site and review the road's elevation, entry and exit points, and traffic arrangements.
We demand that the authorities inspect the site and consult local residents before proceeding further. The road must be designed to ensure safe and convenient access to the locality. If the present construction creates difficulties for residents, corrective measures must be taken without delay, he said.
Dangat further said that infrastructure projects should be implemented after considering the needs of the people living in the surrounding areas. He warned that inadequate planning could lead to traffic congestion and inconvenience for residents, particularly during school hours.
On behalf of Samasta Vadgaon Gavkari, our demand is clear that development must serve the people, not create hardships for them. A service road that makes access difficult, creates safety risks for schoolchildren and potentially worsens traffic cannot be considered properly planned. The authorities must review the design and rectify the deficiencies, he said.
Warning of an escalation if the concerns remain unaddressed, Dangat said residents preferred a constructive solution through dialogue with the administration. We want a practical solution, not confrontation. However, if the authorities ignore our objections and continue the work without resolving these issues, residents will be compelled to launch an agitation.
We will not remain silent when public safety and the convenience of Wadgaon Budruk residents are at stake, he added.
Speaking on behalf of the villagers, he strongly urged the authorities to reconsider the proposed service road, stating that it would obstruct the ongoing expansion of the Pune Metro network. He pointed out that the road would affect a 30-metre-wide stretch along Sinhagad Road, as well as the road connecting Manik Baug to Nanded City, the road over the closed pipeline and the proposed Khadakwasla-Hadapsar road along the canal. He said the service road would create obstacles to these crucial road infrastructure projects and called for a review of the proposal in the larger public interest.
