Country's first multi-species fish seed production center coming up in Vengurla, will benefit Kokan and Sindhudurg: Nitesh Rane

Kolhapur/Sindhudurg, Oct 16 (UNI) State Fisheries Minister Nitesh Rane said that the country's first multi-species fish seed production center at Ubhadanda in Vengurla tehsil of Sindhudurg district, will give a new direction to the economy of Kokan and Sindhudurg and pave the way for the economic prosperity of the local fishermen.
Rane, who is also Sindhudurg district guardian minister, was speaking at the foundation stone laying ceremony of the country's first multi-species fish seed production center at Ubhadanda in Vengurla taluka.
He said that a factory that invested Rs 30 crores had received an offer of Rs 450 crores from an American company. On this basis, by making good use of our fish waste, the locals will get huge economic benefits through this.
Currently, Andhra Pradesh is the top fish producer in the country, producing 55.39 lakh tonnes of fish annually, and the state earns an income of Rs 77,085 crore from the fishing industry alone.
In comparison, Maharashtra is currently producing 7.43 lakh tonnes, and the state's income is Rs 12,775 crore.
Following the example of Andhra Pradesh, the state government has given 'agriculture status' to the fishing industry to empower the fishermen of Maharashtra to compete globally.
"This ambitious project will be completed within 12 months, i.e. by October 15 next year, and the Chief Minister and other senior ministers will come for the inauguration," Rane said, and expressed confidence that the project will greatly benefit the fisheries sector, women's self-help groups and the youth here and the entire Sindhudurg district including Ubhadanda will become more economically viable.
