Actress held for alleged sex racket in Thane

Mumbai, Sep 27 (UNI) The Anti-Human Trafficking Unit (AHTU) of the Thane Crime Branch has arrested an actress for allegedly running a prostitution racket and luring young women from the entertainment industry into commercial sex work, police said on Sunday.
Two women were rescued during the operation and have been shifted to a shelter home for care and rehabilitation, officials said.
Acting on a tip-off, a decoy customer was sent to contact the accused and confirm the alleged transaction.
The actress was arrested by an AHTU team at a bar and restaurant in the Wagle Estate area of Thane, reports said.
During the operation, police seized cash and mobile phones from the spot.
Preliminary investigation suggests that financial difficulties and a lack of regular acting opportunities may have led the accused to allegedly operate the network, police said.
A case has been registered at the Wagle Estate Police Station under the Prevention of Immoral Traffic Act (PITA).
Police are now examining the accused's background and phone records to identify other people who may be linked to the alleged racket. Investigators are also verifying the serials, films and web series in which the accused and the rescued women have previously worked.
