Adani’s Colombo terminal doubles capacity to 3.2 mn TEUs

Sri Lanka/Thiruvananthapurm, Oct 1 (UNI) Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone's (APSEZ) Colombo West International Terminal (CWIT) has doubled its capacity to 3.2 million TEUs following the completion of a USD 750 million Phase II expansion, the company said.
Sri Lankan Prime Minister Dr Harini Amarasuriya inaugurated the expanded terminal, which is Sri Lanka's first fully automated deep-water container terminal.
CWIT said it had become the fastest terminal to handle one million TEUs in its inaugural year in 2024 and has now crossed the two-million-TEU milestone within the first 18 months of operations.
The expansion enables simultaneous berthing of three ultra-large container vessels at the terminal, strengthening its capacity to handle growing transshipment and export-import cargo.
With the enhanced capacity, CWIT is expected to move closer to handling nearly 25 per cent of the Port of Colombo's targeted 13 million TEU capacity by 2028, positioning the terminal as a major transshipment gateway in the region.
Since its commissioning, the terminal has generated more than 3,000 direct and indirect employment opportunities, according to APSEZ.
The Phase II expansion also strengthens APSEZ's international portfolio and its presence along key maritime trade corridors across the Indian Ocean.
A TEU, or Twenty-foot Equivalent Unit, is the standard unit used to measure container-handling capacity, with one 20-foot container equivalent to one TEU.
