T'gana: Congress MP Vamsi Krishna seeks transparency in CEC appointment, stronger voter safeguards

Hyderabad, Oct 2 (UNI) Congress MP Gaddam Vamsi Krishna today called for greater transparency in the appointment of the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) and stronger safeguards for voters' rights, stressing the need to protect democracy and constitutional values.
In a statement here, Vamsi Krishna said the country needed robust democratic institutions, constitutional safeguards and protection of every citizen's right to vote, rather than calls for people to sacrifice their lives for the nation.
Referring to the 2023 law governing the appointment of the CEC, he noted that the selection committee comprises the Prime Minister, the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha and a union Cabinet Minister nominated by the Prime Minister.
He urged Parliament to consider a mechanism that would strengthen institutional independence and public confidence in the appointment process.
The MP said concerns and allegations relating to the electoral process should be addressed transparently by the concerned constitutional institutions.
Voters should not have to approach multiple offices to establish or safeguard their voting rights, he added.
He stressed the need for transparent electoral rolls, accessible grievance-redressal mechanisms and effective protection of voter rights.
He also highlighted the Election Commission's online voter services, which enable citizens to check electoral-roll details, registration status and other election-related information.
“Every vote matters and every citizen’s voice matters. Public confidence in the electoral system must be protected and strengthened,” he stated.
Vamsi Krishna called for accountability in addressing concerns surrounding the electoral process and urged constitutional institutions to take steps to strengthen public trust in India's democratic system.
