After Bihu and Jhumoir records, Assam plans largest performance of Bodo traditional dance

Guwahati, Jun 26 (UNI) After the largest Bihu and Jhumoir ensemble, Assam will have the largest ever Bagurumba and Bardwisikhla performance in November , 2025 in Guwahati.
Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said this on Thursday on his 'X' handle.
"Get ready to witness the largest ever Bagurumba and Bardwisikhla performance, this November, in Guwahati.
We are committed to take our vibrant culture to the global stage. After the super successful Bihu and Jhumoir performances, it's now time for Bagurumba and Bardwisikhla.," said the Assam Chief minister on his X handle.
It may be mentioned here that Bagurumba is a traditional dance of the indigenous Boro people living in the State of Assam and North East India. Bodo women clad in colourful traditional attire perform the dance which is also accompanied by handmade percussion instruments such as 'kham' (a long cylindrical drum, made of wood and goat skin or other animal’s skin), sifung (flute, carved out of bamboo), jota (made of iron/tama), serja (a bowed instrument, made of wood and animals skin), and gongwna (made of bamboo), tharkha (a piece of split bamboo).
Bardwi Sikhla Dance, on the other hand, is also another traditional dance form which symbolizes the advent of monsoon. Bardwi is made up of two words - 'bar' (wind), 'dwi' (water) and 'sikhla' (meaning a young girl. This is performed according to the tune of a particular music.
In April 2023, Assam created a history by organizing the largest ever Bihu dance performance at a single venue at the Sarusajai Stadium in Guwahati, which has also made its way into the Guinness Book of World Records.
A total of 11,304 dancers and drummers performed the Bihu dance. The largest ensemble of 2,548 Assamese drum players also performed with the dancers breaking the previous world record of 1,356 drums.
In a similar event in February this year, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the largest-ever Jhumoir dance performance at Guwahati’s Sarusajai Stadium, commemorating the 200th anniversary of Assam’s tea industry. Titled as ‘Jhumoir Binandini 2025,’ featured over 8,000 artists from the tea garden community, showcasing the rich cultural heritage of Assam.
It may be mentioned here that Jhumoir is a traditional dance integral to Assam’s tea garden workers and Adivasi communities. Originating in the early 19th century, it served as a medium for workers to express joy and unity after laborious days in the tea plantations.
