Time is short but we are hopeful: Gaurav Gogoi on 2026 Assam elections

Guwahati, June 26 (UNI) Newly appointed president of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee, Gaurav Gogoi today said that the party is hopeful about doing well in the 2026 assembly elections in the state despite the short time remaining for the preparations.
Interacting with a section of the media here, he said the party has started preparing fornext year's elections. "Time is short, but there will be fights," said the Lok Sabha MP and Deputy Leader of the House in Lok Sabha.
"It's been one month since the new APCC committee has taken charge. During this period, we have taken everyone in the team along and reviewed the preparedness. The feedback from the ground is positive and I am very hopeful," he said.
He said the party would strengthen its organisational base in all 126 constituencies across the state.
"We can fight only when the party is strong in all the constituencies. The BJP has attacked the voters' list, which is the basis of the electoral process. In the recently concluded panchayat elections, we have seen how the BJP has manipulated the voters' list," he said, terming this as the 'emergency' declared by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.
It may be mentioned here that the Congress was voted out of power in Assam in 2016, and ever since, it has not won any major elections in the state. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had been attacking Gaurav Gogoi, targeting his visit to Pakistan some years back.
Ever since Gogoi took over as APCC chief, he has been seen visiting different constituencies and meeting people from different fields, trying to gauge the ground situation. Gogoi has also been attacking the ruling BJP and Sarma for allegedly running networks controlling the trade of stone, sand, and supari (areca nut).
It may be mentioned here that Assam had undergone A delimitation exercise in 2023 after almost 27 years and witnessed changes in the existing political landscape. The assembly polls of 2026 will be the first assembly election with delimited constituencies. UNI ANP SSP
