Agri students to be trained as job creators, not job seekers: Sinha

Patna, Oct 29 (UNI) Agriculture Minister Vijay Kumar Sinha said an Agricultural Students' Industrial and Entrepreneurship Training Model would be implemented in all nine constituent colleges under Bihar Agricultural University (BAU), Sabour, to make agricultural education employment-oriented and equip students to become self-reliant entrepreneurs.
Sinha said the initiative aimed to supplement classroom learning with practical training, industrial exposure and opportunities to establish businesses, transforming students from job seekers into employment-generating entrepreneurs.
The minister said administrative approval of Rs 4.80 crore had been granted for the scheme for the financial years 2026-27 to 2029-30. Approval had also been accorded for the withdrawal and expenditure of a grant-in-aid of Rs 90 lakh for implementing the scheme in 2026-27.
He said the agriculture sector offered immense opportunities for employment and entrepreneurship, but students needed practical experience, industry linkages and support to explore business opportunities alongside academic knowledge. The proposed training model would enable them to use their technical expertise, talent and innovative ideas to develop new ventures in agriculture and create employment opportunities for other young people.
Sinha said agricultural education needed to be aligned with contemporary requirements and market opportunities. In accordance with the recommendations of the sixth Deans'' Committee of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) and the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, the model would provide practical exposure to skill-enhancement courses included in undergraduate agriculture programmes.
Under the initiative, students would be connected with agro-based industries, successful start-ups, entrepreneurs, village-level activities and relevant administrative institutions to help them better understand opportunities in employment, self-employment and agribusiness.
The minister said a dedicated training week would be organised immediately after the mid-term examinations in each semester, from the first to the fourth semester of undergraduate courses. During this period, students would receive hands-on training, visit industries and relevant institutions, interact with successful entrepreneurs and participate in village-level activities.
The programme would familiarise students with the practical challenges of the agriculture sector, market demand, production and processing opportunities, and the operational aspects of agricultural businesses. This, in turn, would help them make better use of available employment opportunities after completing their studies and encourage them to establish their own enterprises.
Sinha said specialised practical training would be provided in market-oriented fields such as biofertilisers, biopesticides, mushroom cultivation, ornamental fish farming, tissue culture, vermicomposting, honey production and food processing.
The initiative is expected to strengthen links between agricultural education, industry and markets while promoting self-reliance among students and generating new employment opportunities in the agriculture sector, he added.
