Tea auction centre opens in Agartala

Agartala, Oct 30 (UNI) Tripura Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha opened the state’s first Tea Auction Centre at P N Complex in the city to facilitate tea growers to earn better prices, cut transport costs and strengthen the tea industry.
Calling the opening a historic day for Tripura, Dr Saha credited the government, departments and other partners, describing it as the result of Team Tripura’s efforts. He linked the project to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s call to dream big and turn aspirations into action, saying state development plans were now moving ahead.
He said Tripura’s soil and climate support quality tea. The state ranks third nationally and second in the Northeast in tea production, producing about 70–100 lakh kilograms each year. The industry includes around 54 tea gardens and 2,000–2,800 small growers.
Since 2018, the government has worked to improve garden infrastructure, support workers and their families, and help children access education. It is also seeking to restore struggling gardens and make them more productive and sustainable. The goal, Dr Saha said, is to secure income for thousands of families and create jobs, not simply raise output.
Until now, much of Tripura’s tea travelled to Kolkata and Guwahati for auction and sale. The added distance raised costs and delayed payments. The new centre will give producers an auction facility in the state. E-auctions are expected to increase transparency and buyer competition, reduce reliance on middlemen, and connect local growers directly with major tea exporters and packaging firms.
Testing services, warehouses and other support facilities will also cut transport, storage and sample-testing costs. Information shared at the event said the centre could save about Rs 3–6 per kilogram and shorten the selling process by nearly 40 per cent, from 44 days to about 26 days.
The CM said he hoped better prices would encourage growers to improve tea quality, modernise production and build Tripura tea’s name in national and international markets.
