Ahmedabad plane crash: 223 DNA samples matched, 204 bodies handed over to families

Ahmedabad, June 20 (UNI) The DNA samples of 223 people who died in the Ahmedabad plane crash have been matched, and 204 bodies have been handed over to their families so far.

Superintendent of Ahmedabad Civil Hospital, Dr. Rakesh Joshi, said today that 220 relatives had been contacted.

The hospital has handed over a total of 204 bodies, including of two individuals who were initially undergoing treatment at the hospital and later succumbed to their injuries.

Dr. Joshi said that among the 223 deceased, 168 were Indian citizens, seven were Portuguese, 36 were British citizens, one was Canadian, and 11 were non-passengers, including local people.

The bodies were transported to their homes via air and road, with 15 bodies sent by air and 189 by road.

Dr. Joshi provided a breakdown of the bodies handed over, stating that the recipients included families from various cities in Gujarat, such as Ahmedabad, Vadodara, Surat, and others, as well as from other states like Maharashtra and Nagaland, and even abroad, including London.
Air India Flight AI171, a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, crashed shortly after takeoff from Ahmedabad’s Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport on June 12, killing 241 passengers and crew, besides at least 30 people on the ground. Only one passenger, a British national named Vishwas Kumar Ramesh, survived the disaster.
