AIIMS proposed at Raiganj, cancer care hospital for Jalpaiguri: Bengal CM Adhikari

Siliguri, Oct 29 (UNI) West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari on Thursday announced plans to set up an All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) at Dwipnagar, near Panishala in Raiganj, saying the state government would send a proposal to the Centre for the establishment of the premier medical institution.
The announcement comes amid a long-standing demand for an AIIMS in Raiganj and Uttar Dinajpur district.
Adhikari arrived in Raiganj by helicopter and held a review meeting with the district administration. Senior administrative officials, MPs, MLAs, and two state ministers attended the meeting, where the proposed site for the institution was discussed.
Addressing a public rally at Teesta ground, Raiganj, after the meeting, the Chief Minister reiterated the plan and said he would return with union Health Minister J P Nadda to lay the foundation stone of the proposed institution.
Seeking to reassure people in neighbouring Jalpaiguri district, Adhikari said, “I will not dishearten the people of Jalpaiguri.” He also announced plans to establish a full-fledged cancer care hospital in the district.
Speaking to reporters after the review meeting, the Chief Minister described the state of education and healthcare in Uttar Dinajpur as alarming, alleging that both sectors required substantial improvement.
“There is a university, but proper infrastructure is lacking. There is a medical college and hospital, but no cath lab, no neurologist, and no ICU beds. What was going on? The situation is alarming. We need time to reorganise the system properly, and we will do it,” he said.
Adhikari also expressed surprise that the district had only two trauma care ambulances. He said his government would work to improve healthcare facilities across the district, from Islampur to Raiganj and Kaliaganj.
Alleging that the previous government had inaugurated several projects before their completion, he said the administration would gradually reorganise the district’s education and healthcare infrastructure. Smart schools and smart colleges would also be developed, he added.
The Chief Minister further announced that a college would be established at Hemtabad and would begin functioning in the next academic year.
