Jharkhand: Wild elephant found dead in Latehar forest, probe underway

Latehar, Oct 29 (UNI) A wild elephant was found dead in Bishunpur forest under Balumath police station area of Latehar district, with forest officials suspecting that the animal may have died following a fight with other elephants.
A forest department team led by Ranger Nand Kumar Mahto visited the spot on Thursday, accompanied by a veterinary team for the post-mortem examination.
Mahto said the preliminary assessment suggested that the elephant might have sustained injuries during an encounter with other elephants. However, the exact cause of death would be established only after the post-mortem report, he said.
The carcass was found on Wednesday evening in a remote forest area. The post-mortem could not be conducted that evening due to the late hour.
According to the ranger, the site is located in a valley deep inside the forest, with no village within a radius of two to three kilometres. The department is investigating other possible causes as well, he said.
Elephant deaths following suspected clashes have been reported in the wider Palamu region in the past. Two elephants reportedly died in separate incidents in 2025, while a captive elephant at Betla National Park was killed by wild elephants in 2021.
Local residents said around 15 elephants were currently moving through forests in and around Balumath. The animals have frequently caused problems for residents, while forest officials have made attempts to drive them away, according to the report.
