Alleged BRS workers storm Maha TV office in Hyderabad; widespread condemnation over attack on press freedom

Hyderabad, June 28 (UNI) Tension gripped Hyderabad on Saturday as alleged Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) workers stormed the Maha TV office, vandalizing property over alleged false reporting related to party leader KT Rama Rao (KTR) and the ongoing phone tapping controversy.

According to eyewitnesses, the mob damaged studio equipment, shattered glass windows, and vandalized several vehicles on the premises. The attack forced staff members to flee for safety. Police rushed to the scene and restored order and assessed the extent of damage. No injuries have been reported so far.

Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Bandi Sanjay Kumar strongly condemned the attack, calling it a “blatant assault on press freedom” and accused BRS of attempting to suppress journalism through intimidation. “You can break cameras, not the truth,” he posted on social media.

TPCC President and MLC Mahesh Kumar Goud also denounced the attack as a "heinous act" and urged legal action against those responsible. “If there are objections to media content, there are lawful ways to respond. Violence is unacceptable in a democracy,” he said.

BRS Working President K T Rama Rao appealed to party workers to remain calm and respect the legal process. He criticized the Congress government for fostering what he termed a "culture of lies and anarchy," while vowing to seek legal recourse.

Meanwhile, Telangana Minister Seethakka condemned the attack, calling it an attempt to stifle press freedom. She reminded that even under criticism, BRS never faced such retaliation and urged the party to avoid provocative actions.

Authorities have assured that a thorough investigation will be conducted, and strict legal action will be taken against those involved in the violence.

Telangana Revenue, Housing, Information and Public Relations Minister Ponguleti Srinivasa Reddy strongly condemned the attack on the Maha News channel office by alleged BRS workers, describing it as an "inhuman act" and a serious assault on press freedom.

In a statement, the Minister said such acts of violence against media houses strike at the very foundation of democracy. He assured full support to media personnel and said the government under Chief Minister Revanth Reddy stands firmly with the press, regardless of political affiliation.

Criticising the alleged use of “paid artists” to carry out the attack, he warned that attempts to suppress the media through intimidation will not be tolerated. He affirmed that strict legal action would be taken against those responsible, irrespective of their influence.
