Amit Shah to unveil 1857 martyrs memorial in Ambala on Nov 5

Ambala, Oct 28 (UNI) In a historic moment for the nation, union Home Minister Amit Shah will inaugurate the “Azadi ki Pehli Ladai ka Shaheed Smarak” (Memorial to the Martyrs of the First War of Independence) at Ambala Cantonment on November 5.
The grand memorial, built at a cost of about Rs 800 crore, is Asia’s largest tribute to the heroes of the 1857 uprising, finally giving national recognition to the countless men and women whose sacrifices were long buried in history.
The journey to this day took decades. Conceived in 2010 during former Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda’s tenure, the project faced bureaucratic delays for years. Despite acquiring 22 acres near the local IOC depot and securing Rs 17 crore in sanction from the previous Congress government, the foundation stone ceremony was postponed multiple times.
Only after the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) took office in Haryana in 2014 did the project gain momentum, with Energy Minister Anil Vij championing it and CM Manohar Lal Khattar ensuring swift administrative and financial approval.
“Construction of this memorial was deliberately delayed by the Congress as a planned strategy to deny our national martyrs their due recognition,” Vij had earlier alleged.
The memorial is more than a conventional monument. Spread across a large complex, it houses 23 state-of-the-art galleries that chronicle the 1857 uprising in Ambala, Haryana, Meerut, Delhi, Punjab, Gujarat, Jhansi, and beyond. Visitors can walk through meticulously curated exhibits that bring the events of 1857 to life, from the circulation of lotus flowers and chapatis as symbols of revolt to the final acts of defiance against the British Empire.
What sets this memorial apart is its use of advanced technology to recreate history. A 360-degree projection system offers visitors an immersive experience, transporting them back in time to stand alongside the revolutionaries. Sound and laser shows dramatise the struggle, while a special martyrs’ gallery lets visitors offer a digital tribute by placing their hands at a designated point, with a record permanently maintained.
One of the memorial’s most poignant features is the immortalisation of over 700 identified freedom fighters from across India. Their names, along with their fathers’ names and villages, are inscribed in gold as a permanent testament to their courage. Research was led by a committee of five eminent historians, with documents sourced from national archaeological institutions, libraries in London and Lahore, and works by historians such as Dr. K.C. Yadav, former Head of History Department at Kurukshetra University.
Vij emphasised that the uprising in Ambala began approximately nine hours before the revolt in Meerut on May 10, 1857, a fact drawn from British officers’ records and the 1923-24 Gazetteer, underscoring Ambala’s critical yet under-recognised role in sparking the nationwide rebellion.
The memorial complex has facilities befitting a national landmark. An open-air theatre seating 2,500 and an auditorium for 300 will host cultural programmes and educational events. Dominating the skyline is a 63-metre-high lotus-shaped structure, accessible by two high-speed lifts, with a sky café at the top offering panoramic views. A helipad has been built within the complex to facilitate VIP visits.
Given the depth of content, visitors may need up to six hours to explore the memorial fully. To ensure a smooth experience, visitors will be organised in groups of 40, with one of the country’s largest lifts transporting them between floors. A dedicated electricity substation and backup generator guarantee uninterrupted operations.
The memorial is positioning itself as a pan-Indian destination. A mobile app and official website have been launched for online ticket booking, while eight souvenir shops within the complex will sell memorabilia and replicas. Additionally, all Indian states have been invited to celebrate their State Days at the memorial, fostering a deeper connection between regional identities and the national freedom struggle.
“This is not merely a memorial for Ambala or Haryana; it is a national memorial for the entire country,” Vij declared.
As the nation prepares for the November 5 inauguration, the “Azadi ki Pehli Ladai ka Shaheed Smarak” stands ready to emerge not just as a tourist destination but as a sacred pilgrimage site for every Indian, where the forgotten voices of 1857 will finally echo with the dignity they deserve.
