Anjuman seeks clarity from authorities on Eid prayers at Eidgah

Srinagar, June 5 (UNI) Anjuman Auqaf Jamia Masjid, the managing committee of the mosque affairs on Thursday sought clarity from authorities on allowing Eid-ul-Adha prayers at Eidgah.

Eid-ul-Adha is being celebrated in Jammu and Kashmir on Saturday and it is one of the two major Muslim festivals. It is observed by sacrificing an animal, usually a sheep or goat, and by offering congregational prayers.

A delegation of Anjuman today visited the Eidgah ground to review arrangements for the upcoming Eid-ul-Adha prayers. The delegation met with the Waqf Board administrator and officials overseeing the site, a statement by the Anjuman said.

While it was noted that construction work on the new Mimber (pulpit) is still incomplete, and going on slowly, the Waqf officials concerned assured that the ground can be prepared and made ready to host the Eid congregation — provided that permission is granted by the authorities, the statement added.

Anjuman has formally urged the government authorities to come clear on whether it will allow the Eid-ul-Adha prayers to be held at the Eidgah, in accordance with Islamic tradition.

The Anjuman expressed deep concern over the repeated denial of permission in recent years for conducting Eid prayers at the Eidgah, describing it as a cause of "deep hurt and disappointment" for the faithful.

“It also violated the sanctity of this collective religious tradition,” the statement said.

In April, Eid-ul-Fitr prayers were not allowed at the historic Jamia Masjid and Eidgah in the old city.
Since abrogation of Article 370 on August 5, 2019, Eid prayers have not been allowed at the Eidgah for fear of law and order problems. UNI MJR SSP
