AP: Steps to provide emergency medical services round the clock in light of possible cyclone

Vijayawada, Oct 25 (UNI) Commissioner of the Department of Health and Family Welfare K V N Chakradhar Babu has directed the district officials to take steps to provide emergency medical services round the clock in view of the imminent cyclonic storm.
Chakradhar Babu on Sunday directed the officials to take measures to ensure that emergency medical services remain available at government hospitals, primary health centers and village-level health centers from October 27th to 30th. “There should be no disruption in medical care for pregnant women, newborns, children, the elderly, and individuals suffering from chronic illnesses,” he instructed the officials.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a 'Red Alert' for the Krishna and Bapatla districts for October 27th and for 13 districts for October 28th as the Arnab cyclonic stock is expected to cross the coast between Bapatla and Visakhapatnam on October 28.
“Emergency control rooms that operate 24/7 should be set up in the districts. Flood-prone and low-lying areas must be identified and hospitals and health centers should be inspected to ensure the availability of staff, medicines, equipment, electricity and water supply,” he told the officials.
Coordination should be established with '108' emergency ambulance services, blood banks, and maternity centers for the transport of patients in critical condition, he told the officials, adding that the transfer of patients should not be delayed by waiting for formal authorizations.
Chakradhar Babu directed the officials to assign specific duties to the medical and health officials and keep additional staff on standby. He told them to maintain coordination with the Revenue and Police departments, as well as other relevant departments.
The officials were further directed to ensure storage of essential medicines, ORS solutions, IV fluids, obstetric medications, infant care supplies, oxygen, generators, fuel, and drinking water. Coordination should be established with '108' emergency ambulance services, blood banks, and maternity centers for the transport of patients in critical condition. The transfer of patients should not be delayed by waiting for formal authorization.
The officials said that 26,678 pregnant women, whose deliveries are antipicated between October 23 and November 6, are being shifted to hospitals. Pregnant women in low-lying or flood-prone areas—as well as those classified as 'high-risk' due to severe anemia, other health complications, or a history of previous Caesarean sections—are being prioritized for transfer to hospitals.
