Sports key to fighting drug abuse; Kerala sets 2036 Olympics as target: CM

Kozhikode, Oct 25 (UNI) Kerala Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan today described sports as the strongest weapon against drug abuse and said the government would ensure that children were protected from the influence of drug mafias.
Inaugurating the 68th State School Sports Meet at the NIT ground here, he announced plans for a comprehensive sports development programme aimed at preparing the state for the 2036 Olympics.
The government would meet the entire expenditure of students taking part in competitions outside Kerala, including travel and daily allowances, ensuring that financial constraints did not burden athletes or their parents, Satheesan said.
He also announced measures to ensure that prize money earned by athletes for winning medals in international competitions was credited directly to their bank accounts.
A special comprehensive package would be rolled out jointly by the General Education and Sports Departments to strengthen sports infrastructure and development, including the appointment of sports teachers, he said.
The government would work towards establishing new playgrounds and stadiums in every district. Steps would also be taken to expedite the procedures for the proposed international-standard football stadium in Kozhikode, he added.
Satheesan praised the people of Kozhikode for making the sports meet their own event, reflecting the district's famed hospitality. He wished success to all participants across various sporting disciplines, including inclusive sports. General Education Minister N. Shamsudheen presided over the inaugural function.
