CPI(M) seeks High Court judge-led probe into ESI hospital cleaning contract scam

Hyderabad, Oct 25 (UNI) The Telangana State Committee of the CPI(M) has demanded a comprehensive inquiry by a sitting High Court judge into alleged irregularities in cleaning contracts awarded to four major ESI hospitals in the State.
The party has also sought the immediate cancellation of the contracts, registration of criminal cases against those responsible and recovery of the alleged misappropriated funds.
In a statement, CPI(M) State secretary John Wesley alleged that cleaning charges had been increased from Rs 10 to Rs 49.50 per square foot, ignoring the reports of the employment committee and recommendations of officials. He demanded an investigation into the role of senior officials in approving the hike.
According to the party, the increase had pushed monthly expenditure on cleaning services from Rs 61.71 lakh to Rs 3.05 crore. Despite the nearly 260 per cent increase in charges, the wages of workers employed at the hospitals had not been raised, Wesley alleged.
The CPI(M) said a routine vigilance inquiry would not be sufficient to establish the facts and called for an independent, comprehensive investigation into the entire contract process. It also demanded stringent action against officials and the contracting agency if wrongdoing was established.
Referring to an earlier controversy over medicine procurement at ESI hospitals, Wesley said the latest allegations raised serious concerns about the management of funds meant for workers’ healthcare and welfare.
The party urged the State government to cancel the disputed contracts and take immediate legal action against those found responsible for the alleged irregularities.
